The birth took 54 years between the restoration of Charles 2nd in 1660 and the death of Queen Anne in 1714. The book tells the story of those 54 years, lifting the veil of confusion thrown around the system by today’s economic experts and commentators. It provides readers with a basic knowledge of the system’s operation, sufficient to interpret the present and understand the future.
It is a story of expediency driven by easily understood human traits and problems with equally straight forward solutions often arrived at only days before seemingly inevitable military or financial collapse. The individuals involved were strong, larger than life characters such as Downing who set up systems for managing government funds, Defoe who launched the first National Lottery and Isaac Newton who beyond his scientific achievements stabilised the currency following a banking collapse in not unfamiliar circumstances. The book describes the problems as they unfolded and the solutions that followed to reveal the foundations of our economic system. Explanation is accompanied by a biographical narrative highlighting the remarkable characters involved and the remarkable age in which they lived.
The book describes how a series of wars led to the formation of institutions such as the Bank of England, the national debt , the national lottery, government bonds, the bond market and an expanding global economy all centered on London. The book goes on to describe how the Great Fire spawned the first entrepreneurial economy with the formation of a stock market, the banking system, and the insurance industry. The final great event was the birth of modern science with the Royal Society whose members joined stock brokers around the corner from Gresham’s College to create the first 'silicon valley’ backing amongst other ‘hi tech’ schemes, Edmund Halley’s diving company and Thomas Savarey’s steam engine, the forerunner of Newcomen’s great engines and beyond to Boulton and Watt.
All this was triggered by the restoration of Charles 2nd whose supporters invented a system of argumentative but stable government, which we would clearly recognise, with an executive supported by professional civil servants all kept in check by a strong legislating parliament dominated by two parties one of which, the Tories, was formed at the restoration. It enabled and encouraged the changes that underpinned the formation of the modern economy and is where this book starts. As you read on you will be forgiven for thinking ‘Can this really be true?’ I assure you it is!
